PescaDOLUS directors Emma Witbooi and Moenieba Isaacs recently attended the launch of the FishFORCE Academy at the Ocean Sciences Campus, Nelson Mandela University, Port Elizabeth. The launch took place as part of a two-day conference ‘Protecting Marine Resources: A Tangled Web’ hosted by the FishFORCE Academy at the university. Dr Witbooi presented on the important role of fisheries crime research via the PescaDOLUS network in informing and supporting fisheries crime law enforcement whilst Associate Professor Isaacs provided insight into her research on small-scale fishing communities. The conference and launch was attended by the Norwegian Ambassador to South Africa, the Norwegian Embassy-Pretoria and the VC of NMU as well as representatives of the South African Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF), the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Operation Phakisa, SANParks, local government and the Indonesian Presidential Task Force to Combat Illegal Fishing amongst others.
